Incoming 6th Graders
Swim parents,
Welcome to the Pershing Aquatics Program. I will be sending more information soon, but here is a little to get you started.
Swim Gym: 6th graders participate in a class with the following basic structure.
Mondays will be all periods for Pershing so they will only have 40 minutes of class. This isn't enough time to change in and out of Swim Suits so we will have regular PE on Mondays.
Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday we will have 1 hour and 30 Min for our class. Swim class will be either 3rd or 7th period. This will mean students only will have to have wet hair for one period a day.
Required Paperwork: Physicals must be completed from June - Aug 15. Physicals taken before June will not be accepted. The physical must last the entire school year. Students will not swim in class until all paperwork is complete. Paperwork must be submitted by Aug 16th. Students will begin swimming Aug 24th or Aug 25 depending on their class period. Required paperwork will be provided June 1st.
Uniform: All sixth graders must wear a team styled swim suit. One piece for girls and jammers for boys. If you are unsure of the suit please send me a photograph before buying one. The suits must be solid black. No accent color is allowed. You are free to select the brand. This should give you options to find one that fits and works for your athlete.
FUN Meet: Unfortunately, incoming swimmers are not eligible for the FUN Meet on May 26th. The good news is they will be for the next three years!
Summer Swimming: I strongly encourage all incoming athletes to find summer swimming opportunities. Swim lessons, summer swim leagues, and year round clubs are great options. I have listed lots of options on the www.waterpandas.swimtopia.com site under resources. If you have any questions please reach out to me. I am confident that your child will enjoy the class more if they are confident in the water.
Swim Gym Focus: Students will learn/refine their swim strokes Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly. We will also work on streamline, starts from the block, and flip turns. If they are familiar with these concepts it will help them with their experience.
Evaluation/Feedback: We have a touchpad system in our pool. We will time students at the beginning of each six weeks. I will print a report card and send it home with the students. The Athlete Report Card will show their previous and latest times. Make sure to celebrate their gains. We will also celebrate them at school.
Other: We will also play water polo, water volleyball, quidditch, and various PE games.
Please, email me any questions.
