Dear Pershing Swim Team Athletes and Parents,

I am writing to inform you of my decision to retire from HISD and Pershing Middle School effective this Friday, Feburary 28th. I have cherished my time at Pershing and am truly sad to leave before the end of the school year. After 26 fulfilling years in education and 5 years at Pershing, I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of this very successful swim program and to have contributed to our shared successes.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have worked with so many amazing athletes and parents. I enjoy watching my students grow, many over several years. As a coach I delight in seeing my former athletes’ success beyond their time in middle school, whether in the natatorium or in life. I have been blessed to hear from the parents of former athletes and the athletes themselves years down the road. These thoughts and messages mean so much.

I know you may ask, “Why must Coach leave before the year is out?” It is a fair question that I believe deserves an answer. I am leaving to help my family. My mother passed away in November. My father has advanced dementia and is medically fragile. My brother, sister, and I have decided to provide 24 hour care for my father instead of placing him in a home. My brother and sister have been providing this care since October, when my father suffered a fall that required a week stay in intensive care. My family is very close and it is my duty to help them. They are both struggling and can’t wait until the end of the year. Please know that I will always cherish the time I have had at Pershing.

Thank you for the incredible memories and for making my time with the Pershing Swim Team so rewarding. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
